4 Winter Security Tips for Your Business

We know the winter months all too well – it’s dark, it’s cold, and don’t get us started on the never-ending rain that we receive here in Vancouver, BC. The last thing you should be worrying about during the winter, is the safety and security of your business, employees, and customers. To keep your business and property secure this winter, and for many winters to come, we’ve compiled a list of our top five tips.

1.     Conduct a Risk Assessment

In preparation for the cold winter months, we recommend completing a risk assessment of your property – including the interior and the exterior. The last thing you need during the busiest season, is an injured patron or visitor of your establishment and the liability that comes along with a fall or an injury. Don’t know what to look for when completing a risk assessment? Our team can help to ensure you’ve checked all the boxes and know what to look for. Don’t have time? Let our team to take care of it and provide a full risk assessment and report, as well as recommended tactics and security strategies.

2.     Check Your Surveillance Systems & CCTV Footage

As the days get shorter and darker, it’s best to check the lighting surrounding your CCTV cameras and surveillance equipment to ensure you have a clear view – even when it gets dark at 4 p.m. If you have surveillance system that’s connected to motion sensors, you’ll want to ensure that your cameras can easily pick up movement in all types of lighting. It’s a best practice to check your surveillance equipment on a regular basis; however, it’s a good rule of thumb to complete the checks and the beginning of each season. While you’re at it, check on your smoke detectors, alarms, loss prevention equipment and anything else you’ve implemented in your store/business.

3.     Be Prepared

Winter in Vancouver can be unpredictable, so we always encourage our clients to prepare for the worst case scenario so that their business is always protected – even in the least likely circumstances. Ensuring you have adequate signage for falling ice or slippery floors, working security equipment (and back-up), and even employing a part-time or seasonal security team can keep your business at its most effective state during the busiest time of the year.

4.     Provide Seasonal and Full-Time Employees With Security Training

During the winter, it’s cold and dark and it can become easier to forget things when you’re rushing to get out of the cold and go home. As a best practice, we recommend providing your employees with a quarterly security refresh to remind them of current safety guidelines and protocols in place to keep your people, and your business, safe. Share the reasons why your business’s security is important as well as incentives or check-lists to help ensure employees check all the boxes during opening and closing shifts – it’s a small step that could save you time and money in the long run.
