What Kind of Training do Security Guards Need?

What Kind of Training do Security Guards Need?

The security industry is one of the most rapidly expanding industries in the world. With over 4 million people employed as security guards, it’s no wonder that this field is growing so much. In fact, within the next decade it is expected to grow even more! As the field continues to rapidly grow and evolve, so do its training requirements. As a Vancouver based security company, providing services for a myriad of clients across the Lower Mainland and beyond, we care deeply about our community and the people within it. At IntercomLux Security, we put a huge emphasis on our social impact, starting with the professionals we employ, by providing them with a plethora of training and certification requirements.

Of course, security guards must partake in training courses before they begin work in the field and there are a number of different courses that may be required dependent on the company, industry that professional is specialized in, and many other factors. As such, whether or not a particular course is mandatory is dependent on the type of security guard position, as well as what kind of business the guards are hired to protect. For example, a guard hired to provide retail loss prevention services for a clothing store in the mall will require different training, courses, and skills than a guard hired to provide VIP or private security for a celebrity or public figure.

If you’ve ever been curious as to what types of courses security guards have to partake in at IntercomLux Security or you’re looking to become a security guard and are hoping to garner an idea of the courses you might need, we’ve listed a few of the mandatory courses to become a security guard at intercomLux:

Naloxone Training

As the opioid epidemic continues to worsen in Canada, and in 2020 alone 4,395 people died from opioid overdose. Naloxone is an opioid antagonist which means it binds to the same receptors as the opioids and temporarily blocks their effects – with no other side effects, it is one of the safest and most effective methods to ensure an overdose is not fatal. As the opioid crisis still looms, especially in North America, Naloxone training is crucial to saving lives from overdose; the training teaches individuals how to recognize the signs of an opioid overdose and administer the opioid overdose reversal drug Naloxone. All of our security guards at IntercomLux are equipped with Naloxone training, enabling them to act quickly and accurately in the presence of an overdose.

Indigenous Awareness Training

We all have a responsibility to educate ourselves and recognize our role in the journey towards meaningful reconciliation for Indigenous peoples and their communities, which has become even more prevalent in recent years with multiple cases of unmarked graves at Residential Schools in Canada being uncovered. Indigenous Awareness Training is an imperative piece of our training program for security guards because it has a direct impact on our guards’ ability to engage and collaborate with Indigenous communities in BC – and beyond.

Mental Health Training

Similarly to Indigenous awareness training, mental health training allows security guards to work with and respond to individuals facing mental health issues in a better and more effective manner. By implementing mental health training, we are providing our guards with the additional training required to successfully interact with individuals suffering mental health crises and de-escalate these situations. As security guards are consistently engaged with various publics, the enhanced awareness and communication skills improves safety for all participants, leading to better outcomes when there is a mental health crisis.

As we’ve outlined in this blog post, training is imperative to the security industry and the professionals within it. If you’re looking to become a security guard, or just interested in the industry itself, we hope this gave you a glimpse of what training is required. Or, if you’re looking for professionally trained security guards to take care of all your security needs, you know you can trust IntercomLux Security to provide professionals that are properly trained to provide you with a comprehensive security plan and execute accordingly.
